Dr Ian van Rooyen lectures sociolinguistics, phonetics, contemporary metaphor theory, the interaction between linguistics and literature, and Afrikaans language acquisition at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He established the School of Languages and Literatures' Afrikaans courses for health sciences students at the University of Cape Town's medical school. His research interests include the manifestation of metaphor in cognition, behaviour, and literature, as well as pedagogic elements related to language teaching for specific purposes. 

Research interests: second language acquisition and teaching; special purposes language teaching; contemporary theory of metaphor.
