Rolf Michael Schneider is Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology at Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, and Honorary Professor at the School of Languages & Literatures, University of Cape Town. In 2018 he was Guitty Azarpay Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a specialist of Greek and Roman art and archaeology with a focus on image, portrait and sculpture. Further interests encompass the dynamics of cross-cultural exchange and the universialism of classical concepts and things in (post-)antique histories. Rolf has held senior positions in Heidelberg, Cambridge (UK), and Munich. In 2008 he founded, with François Lissarrague (Paris) and R.R.R. Smith (Oxford), the series ICON, spotlighting the interaction of (I)mage and (Con)text, with 22 edited volumes so far.
