Research Interests: Reintellectualization of African languages for use in higher education; Terminology development for African languages with a focus on isiXhosa; Translation studies and its role in the development of African languages; Mother tongue-based bilingual education; African language lexicography
Prior to joining UCT, Wanga was a lecturer at Rhodes University’s African languages department. This was after obtaining a PhD in the Languages and Cultures of Africa at SOAS University of London. His PhD research focused on the development of isiXhosa cell biology terminology and its use in teaching and learning in higher education to determine the extent of its usefulness for African language speaking students. He also worked for the isiXhosa National Lexicography Unit based at the University of Fort Hare as an editor. Currently, Wanga is working on a dictionary research project in collaboration with Rhodes university colleagues, he is also working on publications based on his PhD research.
