Convener: Dr M Mulaudzi Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an honours programme. The course explores the history and legacies of ideas and practices central to indirect rule and ongoing attempts to reform them in contemporary South Africa. Focused on South Africa, but also drawing from broader and comparative literature, the course examines how chieftainship, tribe and the customary emerged as defining features of natives and how they were experienced and shaped by the actions of men, women, young and old over time. How have these ideas continued to shape identities and discourses in the present? |
