Course entry requirements: At least two courses in historical, social science or cultural studies offered by the Faculty of Humanities, or by permission of the Head of Department.

This course introduces how to view history through a ‘gendered lens’ so that we can see how social relations and identities were structured by power at particular moments and how they changed over time. The course is divided into two parts. The first section explores women’s disproportionate engagement in reproductive labour in the domestic sphere. The second section examines women’s engagement in politics, including their trade unionism and the emergence of feminist ideas and social movements, such as that for universal adult suffrage. Finally, it deals with the evolution of gendered identities and practices in a transnational and comparative fashion: focusing on Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America in order to understand discussions around these phenomena in relation to health and education.
