Emeritus Professor Nigel Worden obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge and has taught at Cambridge, Edinburgh and UCT. His research focuses on the eighteenth century Cape colony and its links with the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. A particular emphasis is slavery and its legacy as well as social identity construction in early colonial Cape Town.
He has also worked on heritage issues in South Africa and in Southeast Asia and has authored general surveys and textbooks on South African history. In 2014, Nigel was made a Fellow of UCT 'in recognition of distinguished academic work of such quality as to merit special recognition'.
