Dr Hleze Kunju
Dr Hleze Kunju is a lecturer in Creative Writing and isiXhosa at the University of Cape Town’s School of Languages and Literatures. His research interests include the evolution of isiXhosa oral literature, isiXhosa Sociolinguistics across borders, and the development of isiXhosa as a discipline within Creative Writing.
He previously served as the Head of Creative Writing at Rhodes University, where he also chaired the University’s Language Committee. Dr Kunju made history by writing Rhodes University’s first isiXhosa PhD thesis, for which he received the Most Outstanding PhD Thesis Award from the African Language Association of Southern Africa (ALASA).
He has successfully supervised 24 Master's students, 2 PhD candidates, and 3 postdoctoral fellows.
