Dr Jeffrey Murray
BA(Hons) MA UKZN PhD Cape Town
Research Interests: Latin Prose; History of Classical Scholarship; Classical Reception Studies.
I am Senior Lecturer in Classics. Before joining the University of Cape Town, I was Lecturer in Classics in the School of Religion, Philosophy, and Classics at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I have held fellowships at the Fondation Hardt, Harvard, Oxford, and St John’s College, Cambridge.
I am currently writing a commentary on Book 9 of Valerius Maximus’ Facta et dicta memorabilia, the only book of the work to have an unremitting focus on negative values. I am also interested in the history of classical scholarship and education, particularly in Africa. Here I am working on another monograph, tentatively titled, Small Latin and Less Greek: Classics in Natal, 1843-2000.
