We only consider those who have a strong academic record in their philosophical studies, are reliable and who can be entrusted with the responsibilities of teaching our undergraduate students.
All things being equal, priority will be given to postgraduate students in the Philosophy Department, for whom tutoring is an important part of their philosophical development. However, given our tutoring needs, we regularly employ graduates of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes who are not currently studying in the Department. We also employ excellent third-year students to tutor in first-year courses.
To guarantee consideration, applications should be submitted in good time:
-
By 15 January for first-semester courses.
-
By 15 June for second-semester courses.
However, later applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
To apply for a tutoring position, please download the tutor application form, and submit to philosophy@uct.ac.za or hand in at the department office.
Because the number of positions available depends on class size, and because the class size is only known once classes have begun, appointments can only be confirmed in the first week of the semester.
We shall endeavour, however, to communicate with applicants about the likelihood of employment. Applicants should also feel free to direct inquiries about their applications to the Department’s Administrative Officer.
