Postdoctoral Research Fellowships Applications Advert 2022/2023
The Centre for African Studies (CAS) which is in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Cape Town is partnering with the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences to establish a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme. A total of six (6) postdoctoral research fellowships are offered to suitably qualified candidates who are expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge epistemologies particularly in the humanities and social sciences
Project Themes
The programme will support postdoctoral research fellows who are focusing on the following three broad research themes:
• Global Economy, Development Challenges and Socio-Economic Alternatives.
• Pandemics, Medicine, Disease and Curing.
• Pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial histories in southern Africa.
Conditions of Award:
Applicants are required to meet the following conditions:
a. Must be South African citizens, with a preference for candidates from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
b. Must have attained a Doctoral degree in a relevant/related area of study, which must have been awarded within the past 5 years.
c. May not have held academic and/or professional positions since obtaining the Doctoral degree.
d. May not be held concurrently with other fellowships and/or full-time/permanent employment.
e. Fellowships to have been taken by 30 November 2022.
f. Participate in the activities of the CAS as part of their professional development. Such activities will include limited teaching and participation in the seminar series run by CAS.Publish at least two peer-reviewed pieces per year.
h. Comply with the policies, procedures and practices for the postdoctoral sector of the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the University of Cape Town.
i. Fellows will sign a Memorandum of Agreement with both institutions.
Value of the Award:
The value of the fellowship will be R400 000 annually, renewable annually subject to evidence of satisfactory academic performance and meeting the general requirements of the fellowship as outlined under conditions of the award above. An amount of R50,000.00 will be withheld to provide for running expenses while the rest (R350,000.00) will be in the form of a stipend
Application Requirements:
The following documents will be required:
a. A motivation letter which should be aligned to one or more of the three themes of the programme stated above.
b. The above should be accompanied by a research intent of not more than three pages. The research intent should include a work plan over the two years of the award.
c. Proof that the Doctoral degree has been attained, as per the conditions stated above.
d. A CV including a list of any publications.
e. Certified copies of academic transcripts
f. The names and email addresses of at least two academics, who have taught, supervised or worked with the applicant.
Selection Process:
Eligible and complete applications will be considered by a panel that will be set up by the Principal Investigator of the Programme.
