Dr Viraj Suparsad

Media Studies

Dr Viraj Suparsad is a lecturer at The Centre for Film and Media Studies at The University of Cape Town. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from The University of the Witwatersrand. His PhD thesis earned an award for research excellence. Prior to joining the centre, he served as a Postdoctoral research fellow in African Feminist Imagination at Nelson Mandela University. His research focuses on issues relating to media and gender with particular focus on areas of postfeminism, celebrity culture and popular culture in the global south. He is especially interested in the role everyday media texts play in the process of gender socialization. His academic monograph titled Being Bollywood: Postfeminism, Celebrity Culture and Femininity in the Global South was published in November 2023 with Palgrave Macmillan.
