Threats to Press Freedom: What Can We Learn from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Palestine?
 
In this hybrid panel, Centre for Film and Media’s Prof. Adam Haupt talks to journalists, scholars and activists about threats to press freedom in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Palestine. This comparative discussion creates room for us to reflect upon the ways in which the news is covered by news carriers in the face disinformation and violence. We also explore the difficulties that journalists face in covering the news – be it in the form of physical attacks or rhetorical attacks that take the form of racist or misogynist harassment. Another thread worth exploring would be to consider how activists and ordinary citizens are helping to challenge dominant narratives about South Africa, Zimbabwe and Palestine. Ultimately, we consider some of the continuities and juxtapositions that emerge in these regions.
