Description

This course is an introduction to Media Studies. The course examines the importance of media in modern society and questions the roles that the media play in public life. Using semiotics, we examine how meanings are constructed and interrogate the ways in which hegemony functions in media texts, technology and society. In addition to introducing students to key theoretical concepts, this course introduces students to the conventions of academic writing. Media & Society engages the diversity of students' lifeworlds and is cognizant of our African location. We employ innovative teaching and delivery methods that allow more time for active engagement and the development of critical reading and writing skills in the Humanities.
