Description
In this course students will explore the intersection of gender and race in popular culture. We interpret popular culture broadly to include a wide spectrum of media forms including print media, screen media, social media, music and new media forms. The course, which offers flexible engagement with a range of genres and modalities, would be useful to both Media Studies and Film & Television Studies students in preparation for research projects and creative projects that involve a consideration of race and gender in relation to a range of media forms. Students will be introduced to key theories and debates relating to questions of race, gender and representation. A series of case studies will give students the opportunity to test and explore these ideas. While the course will consider the global relationships which construct identity through the media, we will also pay particular attention to the ways in which race and gender are articulated in the Global South. Classes meet once a week and students are required to read material and engage with key texts in advance.
