Cara Herring

Cara graduated in 2017. Cara is am passionate about truth and seeing people discover who they are. In 2018, she has had  the privilege of gaining video-editing experience at a company called Goddunnit Promotions. She has been one of two editors working on a 26-episode series, ‘Epic Safari Encounters’, which should air in 2019.

She has also written a couple of articles for the National Institute of Allied Arts, one of which was published in a local newspaper: 'The Standard'. As much as Cara would like to study further, her goal is to see communities changed and transformed.  Next year she plans to teach abroad with a friend from university. They hope to teach and travel whilst using their media skills to change lives.

She believes her degree has helped open the door to work opportunities and the practical elements offered by the course were extremely helpful – she uses Premier Pro just about every day.

When asked what was the most important lesson you’ve applied since leaving UCT Cara answers:  “The first word that comes to mind is: kindness. I am so grateful for the kindness that has been shown to me in my life and, because of that, I want to be kinder to others. You know, it doesn’t cost anything to be kind. People are so important - each person has a story and, I believe, something beautiful to offer the world. If we are too busy focusing on ourselves and where we’re going then we will miss so much: We will miss both the beauty and the broken.”

Something she really enjoyed about the department was the freedom she was given to create. The second-year blogging assignment was one her favourite. She kept her blog going and still writes a post occasionally when time allows.

To the incoming students Cara says: “You only have a few years at UCT to expand on what you know, learn what you love and discover more of who you are. Don't waste the time, it'll be over before you know it. Whilst studying important, your time at university is about so much more than that. I want to encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity you are given to learn, grow and improve the lives of others.”
