Senior Lecturer in UCT’s Primary Health Care Directorate, Carla Tsampiras, addresses Time-Travelling Through an Epidemic: HIV, History and the Here and Now in the first lecture of the Medical Humanities series, presented by the School of African and Gender Studies, Anthropology and Linguistics, and the Institute for Creative Arts (formerly GIPCA).

AIDS is a topic that moves through time and space by being old enough to warrant more histories, young enough to maintain contemporary importance in certain regions and, in other regions, middle-aged enough to be discussed as being beyond its most significant (post-AIDS). Depending on who you are, where you are, and who you are talking to, discussing, thinking about, or living with HIV or AIDS-related complexes can feel like time-travelling through an epidemic. By training, historians are required to straddle several temporal spaces and to see similarities and differences across time and space, so they can be useful when navigating epidemics. This talk reflects on a history of AIDS in South Africa, and considers how having and building a memory of the epidemic can help us understand the here and now.

Carla Tsampiras is a Senior Lecturer in the Primary Health Care Directorate at UCT. Her work is concerned with understanding how constructions of ‘race’, gender, sexuality, and class influence understandings of, and responses to, health concerns. Her other areas of interest include gender, violence and slavery in South Africa, the global crises, and Health and Medical Humanities.

The presentation, followed by an open question and answer session, will take place on Thursday 14 April from 17:30 – 19:00 in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre, Old Medical School Building, UCT Hiddingh Campus, 31 – 37 Orange Street, Cape Town.  Refreshments will be served from 17:00. No booking is necessary and all are welcome.

This free public lecture series comprises medical practitioners, scientists, theatre-makers, artists and poets whose lectures and presentations engage with the growing interdisciplinary field of medical humanities, in pursuit of intellectual synergies and their application to medical pedagogy and practice. For more information, contact the ICA office: +27 21 650 7156 or sam.saevitzon@uct.ac.za.
