LAND

‘LAND’, an event comprising performances, visual art installations, public lectures and panels about land, territory, ownership and art – will be presented from 21-24 November at various spaces throughout the City of Cape Town. South Africa is characterised by a series of disjunctive experiences in a land of extraordinary contrast: its natural splendour belies the brutal experiences of slavery, forced removals and continued poverty. The material inscription of colonisation, with the Land Act as its formalisation, remains performative – still determining where people live and intersect, and how people move through space. It results in diverse and opposing ideas, values, dreams that constantly disrupt the country’s present.

TERMINAL – an exhibition on street poles

‘Terminal’ is a publically sited exhibition of photographic work, as part of GIPCA’s interdisciplinary ‘LAND’ project. Presented as A1 sized posters on street poles posters, the exhibition is curated in specific streets in and around the Cape Town CBD. The exhibition does not focus on major narratives or historical overviews, but rather ‘short stories’ or ‘sketches’ from or about the city. By placing these artworks on street poles in busy areas in the city, the artworks compete with the bustle of the City, and alongside those posters promoting concerts and political parties.

Portuguese dance company EIRA will perform Our Lady of Flowers and The King in Exile (remake) on 13 and 14 September. Presented in over forty venues in Europe and South America, Our Lady of Flowers employs a choreography of convulsion, obsession, failing physiological systems, and of the collapsing body – a dance of absolute sensual experience. It is an invocation of ghosts, of ridicule and laughter, of sensuality and obscenity. Their second piece, The King in Exile, is an exploration of political power, merging history and autobiography, encapsulating Camacho’s ongoing explorations of bodily identity, history and representation.

Great Texts – Nicholas Mirzoeff

In 1935 W.E.B. Du Bois published his monumental work ‘Black Reconstruction’. More than just a history of Reconstruction after the abolition of slavery (1865-77), his book was a blueprint for freedom. For Du Bois, the global South was the hope for a different future. Drawing on his prize-winning book, ‘The Right to Look’, Professor Nicholas Mirzoeff’s presentation will track the legacy of ‘Black Reconstruction’ in our understanding of democracy, education, debt and land justice. He connects Du Bois’s project to the global social movements since 2011 and their call for a new reconstruction for our own time.

Zen Marie and Andrew Lamprecht consider seminal writings on cricket. They will examine two books about cricket written over a century apart and very different in intent, style and content, yet in a peculiar way tied together by the narratives and realities of colonialism, class, and agency. K.S. Ranjitsinhji’s ‘The Jubilee Book of Cricket’ (1897) and Herschelle Gibbs’s ‘To the Point’ (2010) form the basis of their investigation. The discussion will be framed by the work of C.L.R. James – influential Tinidadian-born social theorist, political activist, historian and journalist.
