ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS AND FACILITATORS

WORKSHOP 1 (Monday 23 June to Tuesday 24 June) will be facilitated by Karen Stewart. She will introduce participants to the art of seeing, developing methods to connect perception to the physical act of drawing and challenging participants to both ‘look’ in new ways and experience different kinds of mark-making. Attention is paid to the meticulous observation of objects and specifically designed activities enable participants to capture impressions on paper. Work is often completed swiftly, and is interspersed with pauses where slowing down allows careful and complete absorption of the subject matter.

Karen Stewart is an experienced creative process facilitator, with a Masters Degree in Illustration. She has 12 years of facilitation experience at institutes such as the Cape Craft & Design Institute, AAA School for Advertising and several other design industry schools. She is the owner and founder of The Ah HA Company; her business leadership skills allow clients to discover innovative ways of taking their projects forward by using design thinking and co-creation methodologies.

WORKSHOP 2 (Wednesday 25 June to Thursday 26 June) will be facilitated by Leonard Shapiro. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to observational drawing: they will be guided in ways of understanding the structure of an object and then drawing it on paper. The workshop will focus on simple, yet extremely effective, techniques of observing objects that increase the ability to see more of the object, as well as additional creative exercises as part of the drawing process. It is aimed at participants who are drawing for the first time, as well as those who have previous drawing experience.

Leonard Shapiro is a graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT.  He has extensive drawing experience, particularly in observational and gestural drawing.  Leonard facilitates drawing workshops for a number of organisations and also tutors people in drawing techniques on an individual basis. He is the founder of Lateral Leap, a company which facilitates drawing workshops for people in the corporate environment.
