The first concert in the series takes place on Sunday 22 August 2010 when internationally renowned pianist and composer David Earl will be joined by the Odeion Quartet and guest cellist Marian Lewin to perform Earl’s own Piano Quintet in B flat major. The Odeion Quartet and Lewin will also play Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C major. This hour and a half long concert begins at 4.30pm. Admission is free and parking is available on the campus.
David Earl – the Stellenbosch-born concert pianist, composer and teacher who now lives in Cambridge, England – has dedicated his composition to the memory of the late Jacob Kaletsky, under whom Earl studied at Trinity College of Music. Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, widely regarded as one of the great masterpieces of Romantic music, was composed in the final months of his life, although it was not until two decades later that the work received its premiere performance.
The Odeion String Quartet, a flagship of the University of the Free State, has performed to critical acclaim throughout South Africa and plays a strategic role in the development of symphony orchestra and in classical music training in the Free State. Denise Sutton, leader of the Quartet says “We are extremely honoured to be able to work with David Earl and to perform his composition.”
“The warm acoustics and intimate ambience of Hiddingh Hall make it ideal for GIPCA’s Music in the City, which represents a welcome opportunity for Cape Town music lovers to rediscover this marvellous venue,” says GIPCA Board Member and composer Professor Hendrik Hofmeyr, one of the organisers of the series.
