DIAGNOSIS - Writing workshops with Genna Gardini

Genna Gardini’s ICA National Fellowship project looks at using poetry to document personal experiences of Multiple Sclerosis and diagnosis by womxn and LGBTQIAP+ South Africans.

In September, Gardini will be giving two writing workshops around the theme of ‘Diagnosis’. Gardini, who has Multiple Sclerosis and is a wheelchair user, is interested in facilitating writing about personal experiences of any kind of diagnosis with a group of participants. Those interested should be prepared and willing to safely engage with this theme.

Participants will be guided by Gardini through a series of free-writing and poetry exercises to produce written responses to the theme. While Gardini will facilitate the sessions, the writing and subject matter belong entirely to the writer and document their personal experiences. The writing will not be published after the sessions without the permission of the writer.  Participants will not have to share their work in the sessions unless they are willing to do so.

As a poet and playwright, Genna Gardini has won multiple awards for her work, including the DALRO New Coin Poetry Prize. She is a co-founder of Horses’ Heads Productions and member of PlayRiot, the South African playwrights collective. She holds an MA in Theatre-making (Playwriting) from UCT and is currently a lecturer at CityVarsity.
