ICA Fellow Presentation - CONTACT IMPROVISATION MASTERCLASS

Facilitated by THALIA LARIC

Contact Improvisation is an improvisational dance form based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to momentum and gravity. Devised by Steve Paxton as a result of questions he asked himself such as: "How can I implicate my dancers so they take ownership of the dance, so it becomes ‘theirs’”? Paxton eventually arrived at the Contact Improvisation duet as the most “democratic” of forms, famously saying that “In a duet, I cast my vote with every millisecond, with every decision I make”. The body then also learns to release excess muscular tension and to experience the natural flow of movement. Practice includes rolling, sliding, following a physical point of contact, supporting and giving weight to a partner.

2016 ICA Live Art Fellow, Thalia Laric, is one of the leading teachers and facilitators of Contact Improvisation in Cape Town. As a professional dancer and dance educator, she has worked with the First Physical Theatre Company and is co-founder of the Underground Dance Theatre. Her performance research is focused on real-time composition and improvisational dance practice. Laric recently returned from a Dance Improvisation and Performance Intensive at EarthDance Massachusetts, and will be offering a Master Class in Contact Improvisation as part of her Live Art Fellowship with the Institute for Creative Arts. The Master Class is open to beginners and professionals alike.

Following the Master Class, Thalia will be running a weekly Contact Improvisation Class & Jam at Hiddingh Hall - free of charge and open to the public. Classes commence on Sept 15th, 2016.
