During each Great Texts / Big Questions lecture a highly regarded thought leader will discuss one of life’s “big questions” or a significant book or artwork. Jonathan Shapiro studied under Art Spiegelman in New York, during his Fulbright Scholarship. Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel Maus: A Survivor’s Tale recounts his father’s experience of the Holocaust as a Polish Jew who survived Auschwitz.
Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro) started as the editorial cartoonist for South newspaper in 1987. Following his Fulbright Scholarship in New York, where he studied under Spiegelman, Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzmanand, he was the editorial cartoonist for the Sowetan from 1994 to 2005. His cartoons appeared in the Cape Argus from 1996 to 1997, he has been the editorial cartoonist for the Mail & Guardian since 1994, the Sunday Times since 1998 and since September 2005 he has been published weekly in the Cape Times, the Star, the Mercury and the Pretoria News. Shapiro became the first cartoonist to win a category prize in the CNN African Journalist of the Year Awards in 2001, and was awarded the Mondi Newspaper Award for Graphic Journalism in both 2003 and 2004. That same year he was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by the University of Transkei. In 2005 Shapiro won the Principal Prince Claus Award.
