Il Viaggio à Reims (The Journey to Rheims), a lesser-known opera in the Rossini repertoire dating from 1825, is on at the Baxter Theatre Centre from 9 to 15 May. Cape Town Opera and UCT Opera School’s co-production gives a witty and elegantly choreographic update to this exuberant comedy. GIPCA partnered this interdisciplinary collaboration by funding choreographer Sean Bovim and facilitating the involvement of ballerinas from the UCT School of Dance. This is the first time GIPCA and Cape Town Opera will collaborate this year, a precursor to the very special programme of 5: 20 Operas Made in South Africa, opening at the Baxter Theatre in November.
