Award-winning Swiss choreographer Nicole Seiler is best known for her approach to dance in which image, sound and video play a major role, giving rise to multifaceted dance performances, videos and choreographic installations. Seiler’s company will present a series of free public workshops as part of their participation in the 2014 Live Art Festival.

Multi-media composition workshop on the set of Shiver
Seiler’s company will introduce the technical aspects of Shiver, focusing on the use of video and light. This will be followed by a question, answer and demonstration session. The workshop is open to members of the public and theatre makers. Participants should preferably have seen the Shiver performance on 4 September (see Live Art Festival programme). Maximum 20 participants.

Contemporary Dance and Improvisation workshop
This workshop will focus on the movement patterns and improvisation tasks that Seiler’s company has been working on for the last two years, including during the creation of Shiver. Presented by Seiler and her dancers, this workshop is aimed at dancers, choreographers, performers and actors with experience in physical improvisations. Maximum 16 participants.

Little Theatre Sound Studio, UCT Hiddingh Campus
Sound and Composition workshop
This “sound for the stage” workshop will focus on the use of multi-channel sound design for theatre and dance performances. Presented by Aurélien Chouzenoux, the workshop is aimed at technicians and sound designers, as well as choreographers and theatre makers. Maximum 10 participants.

About Shiver
After the trilogy, Playback, Amauros, and Small Explosion with Glass and Repeat Echo, which deconstructed the relationship between movement, sound and image, Nicole Seiler’s Shiver questions reality itself.  A complex video system projects onto the body and objects their own replicas, stylised by computer animation – building a dubious atmosphere, full of suspense, that plays with the codes of film noir, detective and horror movies.

By experimenting with the discrepancies between projections and reality, Shiver troubles the senses, generating suspicion and disquiet.  The set becomes – in a playful manner – a mirror of profound and physical dread. The universe in tension:  shudders guaranteed.
