Dr Mistry will reflect on the structural considerations in moving between the linear experiences of film and the considerations of video practices that allow for alternative narrative structures to emerge. Using excerpts from her various projects, her talk is a reflection on how the themes of the creative projects and theoretical concerns inform her visual choices and overall practice-based research. Mistry’s recurring interest has been to focus on how practice-based research might enable alternative research approaches and she will use some of her own work to exemplify its possibilities and potential in arts programmes at universities
Jyoti Mistry is an Associate Professor at the School of the Arts, University of the Witwatersrand. Having completed her doctorate at New York University, Mistry teaches writing for experimental film and documentary. She is on the board of Wespennest (a Literary, Arts and Culture Journal) and her areas of research include cultural policy, questions of identity and multiculturalism. She has taught at New York University, University of Vienna and Arcadia Polytechnic in Helsinki and served on the executive committee of the National Film and Video Foundation Board from 2003 to 2006. She is a co-founder of Shadowy Meadows Productions.
The presentation, followed by a Q & A session, will take place at Hiddingh Hall, University of Cape Town (UCT) Hiddingh Campus, Orange Street, Cape Town on Wednesday 29 April 2015.
