Great Texts – Carrol Clarkson

Carrol Clarkson will be discussing the work of Nobel Prize-winning novelist, J.M. Coetzee at GIPCA’s Great texts / Big Questions public lecture series. The texts under discussion in Clarkson’s lecture are Waiting for the Barbarians and Disgrace. Clarkson’s research interests lie in the philosophy of language and in post apartheid South African literature and art.

Great Texts – John Higgins

John Higgins will discuss “A lyric by William Blake – Never seek to tell thy love, love that never told can be” at GIPCA’s Great Texts / Big Questions lecture series. He will show how readings of a single poem can also serve to exemplify some of the main intellectual and analytic currents of the past forty years, including radical social movements of the ‘60s; feminism and psychoanalysis in the ‘70s; and the recent problematization of racism and xenophobia.

Great Texts – Angelo Gobbato

Former Director of the UCT Opera School, Angelo Gobbato, will discuss Beethoven’s opera, Fidelio, at GIPCA’s next Great texts / Big Questions public lecture. Fidelio, Beethoven’s only opera, reflects a struggle for political liberty and has relevance to the political history of South Africa. Gobbato’s modern-day production of Fidelio was set in Robben Island and tells the story of how Leonore, disguised as a prison guard named “Fidelio”, rescues her husband Florestan from death in the political prison.

Great Texts – Tim Noakes

Professor Tim Noakes will address “The body is willing but the mind is weak. Or is it the other way around?” The suggested reading is Muscular Movement in Man: The factors governing speed and recovery from fatigue by AV Hill, 1927. Noakes, co-founder of the Sports Science Institute of SA, author, respected academic and A1 rated scientist has long been acknowledged as an expert on endurance racing and ultra marathons.

Great Texts – Mamphela Ramphele

Professor Mamphela Ramphele will discuss “To what extent has our transformation process embraced the intimate in public discourse?” at GIPCA’s Great Texts / Big Questions public lecture series. Ramphele, former Vice-Chancellor of UCT and director of the World Bank, is an academic, author and medical doctor. Her involvement in political activism and academic research has positioned her as a highly knowledgeable and respected thought leader.

Performance – Duende

GIPCA will host a special lunchtime preview of Duende – a Spanish dance and music showcase. Duende is a collaboration between UCT’s School of Dance, Cape Town City Ballet Company, La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre and the Jikeleza Dance Project. It has been choreographed by UCT School of Dance lecturer Dame Mavis Becker de Mazinter – the title by which she is formally known after receiving recognition by the King of Spain for her contribution to Spanish dance. Donald Gordon Creative Arts Fellow and musician, Robert Jeffrey, will be performing with Bienyameen, flamenco guitarist and musical director of La Rosa.

Great Texts – George Ellis

On Thursday 17 September the Great Texts / Big Questions lecture will present an opportunity to hear one of the world’s leading cosmologists discuss the way scientific and everyday views of the nature of things relate to each other. George Ellis, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town (UCT) promises to look at some of the key features of this relation in a way that make the topics accessible to a broader audience. The lecture is inspired by ‘The Nature of the Physical World’ by early twentieth century astrophysicist Arthur Stanley Eddington.

Great Texts – Mark Solms

On Thursday 3 September neuroscientist and psychoanalyst Professor Mark Solms will address the question “What is the mind?” as part of the Great Texts / Big Questions public lecture series presented by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts. Solms is an internationally renowned neuroscientist and psychoanalyst who came to prominence in the 1990s when he discovered how the brain generates dreams. He has since broadened his research to include all the emotional functions and disorders of the brain.

Great Texts – Jonathan Shapiro

On Thursday 20 August cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro (aka Zapiro) will discuss Maus by Art Spiegelman as part of the Great Texts / Big Questions public lecture series presented by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts. Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel Maus: A Survivor’s Tale recounts his father’s experience of the Holocaust as a Polish Jew who survived Auschwitz.

Great Texts – Zackie Achmat

Activist Zackie Achmat on will discuss the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln at the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts’ Great Texts / Big Questions public lecture on 13 August 2010. Achmat is one of the most high profile activists in the country and has publically refused to take anti-retroviral medicines until they are made available by the government in public hospitals and clinics.

Exhibition – Legacies of Landscape

Legacies of Landscape Exhibition at the Michaelis Gallery, Cape Town, from 28 July to 21 August is a rare opportunity to view one of the University of Cape Town’s significant art collections. The exhibition of works from the Katrine Harries Print Cabinet showcases a rich range of prints and printmaking techniques by South African and internationally celebrated artists as diverse as Rembrandt, Durer, Pierneef, Mthethwa and Dumas. To be launched at the exhibition is a portfolio, Homage, created as a tribute to Cecil Skotnes and his contribution to South African art.

Exhibition – Subtle Thresholds

Subtle Thresholds, an exhibition curated by Donald Gordon Creative Arts Award winner Fritha Langerman which explores infectious diseases and the complex inter-relationship between zoological, human and microbial worlds, at the Iziko South African Museum has been extended to 30 July 2010. Drawing on the collections of the Iziko South African Museum, the University of Cape Town, the Wits Adler Museum, and including new artworks by Langerman, Subtle Thresholds draws attention to some of the contemporary debates surrounding biomedical images and artifacts.
