On Wednesday 30 September the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) will host a special lunchtime preview of Duende – a Spanish dance and music showcase.

Duende is a collaboration between UCT’s School of Dance, Cape Town City Ballet Company, La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre and the Jikeleza Dance Project. It has been choreographed by UCT School of Dance lecturer Dame Mavis Becker de Mazinter – the title by which she is formally known after receiving recognition by the King of Spain for her contribution to Spanish dance.

Donald Gordon Creative Arts Fellow and musician, Robert Jeffrey, will be performing with Bienyameen, flamenco guitarist and musical director of La Rosa.

“The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts has been established to encourage interdisciplin- ary projects. A collaboration between student, professional and child dancers, with the combination of music and dance, Duende presents a great opportunity for the public to enjoy a lunchtime of music and dance in the heart of the city,” said Rob Baum, Director of GIPCA.

“The UCT School of Dance has had 75 successful years and the Duende preview performance forms part of our celebrations,” said Gerard Samuel, Director of UCT’s School of Dance. “Since the 1930s our dance students have performed at the Hiddingh campus and now GIPCA has created an opportunity to foster and facilitate synergy and co-operation between the different performing and creative arts depart- ments.”

This special preview will take place at Hiddingh Hall, UCT Hiddingh Campus, Orange Street, Cape Town, at 13h00 on Wednesday 30 September. All are welcome and entry is free.

The full and final version of Duende will be performed at the Baxter Theatre, 11 to 14 November, as part of the Dance UCT 2009 annual showcase.
