Artisit's talk - Wangechi MutuThe Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), in association with STEVENSON, will present a talk by New York-based artist Wangechi Mutu. Mutu’s work has often seemed to bear the gaze of a perpetual outsider, simultaneously drawn to and repulsed by the discovery of another fresh outrage in the lands in which she travels. Much of her work to date has been concerned with the myriad forms of violence and misrepresentation visited upon women, especially black women, in the contemporary world. |

Great Texts – Rustom BharuchaInternationally renowned academic, Professor Rustom Bharucha, will present the final lecture in the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts’ 2014 Great Texts / Big Questions series. Titled ‘The Aftermath: Reflections on Terror and Performance’, this lecture is presented in collaboration with the University of Cape Town’s Drama Department. Drawing on his recently published book ‘Terror and Performance’ (Routledge 2014), Bharucha will probe the modalities and enigmas of one key question: “What happens when the performance ends?” |

Exhibition – IndexIndex, a retrospective exhibition marking the inauguration of Stephen Inggs as Professor in the Michaelis School of Fine Art, presents a survey of his work spanning 25 years – a nexus of an ever expanding anthology of the overlooked, recording that which is inherently transient. Through the development of an ‘archaeographical’ method of unearthing, collecting and photographing found objects, the works on display create associations and traces as indexes and indicators, linking our thoughts about the constructions of the past, in relation to the present. |

International Workshops – Nicole SeilerAward-winning Swiss choreographer Nicole Seiler is best known for her approach to dance in which image, sound and video play a major role, giving rise to multifaceted dance performances, videos and choreographic installations. Seiler’s company will present a series of free public workshops as part of their participation in the 2014 Live Art Festival. The workshops will focus on multi-media composition; contemporary dance and improvisation; and sound composition. |

Exhibition – do itFrom the absurd to the philosophical, the impossible to the seemingly meaningless, Michaelis Galleries is proud to present do it. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, do it is an evolving exhibition created from a series of instructions written by artists as diverse as Marina AbramoviÄ (USA) and Nicholas Hlobo (South Africa). The artist’s instructions are to be openly interpreted each time they are presented, purposefully providing much scope and potential for change. This emphasis on interpretation allows each do it iteration to be lively and experimental. |

Film Screening & Discussion – Pre-LIFE 2Pre-LIFE 2 comprises film screenings and two panel discussions based on two interlinking themes in the Live Art Festival: Femininities and Republic. In Femininities the approaches by live artists as performative peaks in vastly undulating landscape of approaches to the notion of femininity will be considered. Republic considers ideas around nation, nationality, nationhood and authority. These ideas will be discussed by invited speakers as well as some of the artists who are presenting performance art work at the Festival. |

Panel Discussion – Pre-LIFE 1Pre-LIFE 1 comprises visual presentations and a panel discussion around one of the themes in the Live Art Festival: The Periphery as Threshold. Speakers will consider notions of periphery and centre – what these mean as concepts in society and then for artists working outside the gallery system. Does the periphery exist by choice, by design, by force or tacit exclusion? Exhibition – Between Subject and ObjectMichaelis Galleries presents Between Subject and Object, a group exhibition exploring the depiction of human remains at the interface of art and science. In the representation of the dead, there seems to be a continuum, or sliding scale, between an emphasis on the subject-ness of the deceased individual and the object-ness of the corpse. The exhibition will highlight this continuum as an analytical tool to explore and deepen discussion regarding the depiction of human remains, drawing out similarities and differences between photographs, illustrations, films, performances and objects of scientific and cultural interest. |

Great Texts – Clayton CampbellArts writer and artist, Clayton Campbell, will discuss a unique participatory photographic project, Words We Have Learned Since 9/11. Initiated in 2005, Campbell’s project establishes an international dialogue about cultural difference and how persons view their future. Campbell has invited over 1000 people to participate in Words We Have Learned Since 9/11 with each participant answering two questions: “What new words have you learned since 9/11, or what words did you know that have taken on a new meaning for you since 9/11.” |

Johannesburg Workshop in Theory and CriticismThe Johannesburg Workshop in Theory and Criticism (JWTC) will host several public events in association with GIPCA on 10 and 11 July. Each year the JWTC hosts a long international workshop on a theme that emerges from the South African context, but has global implications. The 2014 theme, Archives of the Non-Racial, seeks to read the history of the South African struggle against forms of racial subjugation into and with an international struggles against racism. |

Great Texts – Mark GevisserLeading South African author and journalist, Mark Gevisser, will use over a century of maps of Johannesburg as his Great Text. “When I was a boy, in the 1970s, I used to play a game I have retroactively called Dispatcher, for hours on end, using my parents’ street guide, Holmden’s Register of Johannesburg. Ring-bound with a blue cloth cover, its whimsical title and archaic typography conjured a nostalgia for less turbulent times – although I knew none of that, of course, aged seven or eight, when I found a whole world between its covers.” Thus begins Gevisser’s new book, ‘Lost and Found in Johannesburg’ and his engagement with his first “Great Text”. |

Great Texts – Edgar PieterseRenowned urbanist and academic, Professor Edgar Pieterse, will discuss Africa’s urban revolution as part of GIPCA’s Great Texts/Big Questions public lecture series. Africa’s urban revolution is at the epicentre of the so-called ‘rise of the continent’. Yet, the prospect of a doubling of the urban population in just one generation, the explosion of a youthful demographic confronted with the absence of decent work and omnipresent consumer cultures, represent spectres beyond serious political or policy contemplation. |

Film screening and discussion – Miners Shot DownGIPCA will host a screening of Rehad Desai’s much anticipated documentary film about the tragedy at Marikana, ‘Miners Shot Down’. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion. ‘Miners Shot Down’ weaves together the central point-of-view of three strike leaders, with compelling police footage, television archive archive and interviews with lawyers representing the miners in the ensuing commission of inquiry into the massacre. What emerges is a tragedy that arises out of the deep fault lines in South Africa’s nascent democracy, of enduring poverty and a twenty year old, unfulfilled promise of a better life for all. |

Titled, ‘Writing and Performing Cape Town’, Davids’ lecture will offer a series of reflections around writing and performing contemporary and historical Cape Town. It will draw on a range of texts, both literary and theatrical, to stage questions around place, belonging, memory, ownership, home and the politics of nostalgia. International performances – HATE RADIOThe Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) opens 2014 with the critically acclaimed interdisciplinary theatre production, HATE RADIO, authored and directed by essayist, critic, cinema and stage director, Milo Rau. The work addresses the Rwandan Genocide and is brought to Southern Africa by the Goethe-Institut and Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council. Following extensive research and interviews with contemporary witnesses of the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the script for HATE RADIO is based primarily on excerpts of real transmissions made by the popular Rwandan radio station RTLM. |
