The Third Year Theatre Makers and Choreography students at the Centre for Theatre Dance & Performance Studies normally present choreographic productions in various sites after a Choreography Course.
The pandemic necessitated a re-think in how to make this material, with the imperatives for social distancing and other measures. The online option was inevitable. Screendance, already an established form that combines filmmaking and dance, provided an opportunity for these young dance makers to explore this increasingly popular and accessible form together with the choreography course.
Teachers on the course included Jay Pather (convenor), Jackie Manyaapelo and Jeannette Ginslov. The collaboration with the Institute for Creative Arts allowed for an interdisciplinary approach that facilitated access to screendance technique (by Ginslov) and editing sessions provided by niela gie. The course is short (8 weeks that include workshops, rehearsals, filming and editing); but the visions are big. The artists worked with the notion of Paradise, many giving the concept an idiosyncratic take.
