They will each discuss a favourite literary page. “At GIPCA we are constantly pushing boundaries on how The Great Text may be viewed. In this instance, a microscopic gaze via a single page provides a key. Conceptualised by convener Imraan Coovadia, it is another inventive way of approaching contemporary subjectivities in a playful yet highly considered way. The exercise promises to be both entertaining and illuminating,” said GIPCA Director, Jay Pather.
Henrietta Rose-Innes will explore why the first page of JG Ballard’s short story The Voices of Time, fascinates her. Rose-Innes is an award-winning writer and has published a collection of short stories, Homing, and two previous novels, Shark’s Egg and The Rock Alphabet. Her novel Nineveh will be published in August 2011.
Rustum Kozain will discuss a page from Mongane Wally Serote’s City Johannesburg (first published in 1972). Kozain studied for many years at UCT and taught there from 1998 to 2004. His first volume of poetry, This Carting Life, was published in 2005 and his second will hopefully appear next year.
Poet and scholar Gabeba Baderoon will look at passages from A Life Apart (2010) by Neel Mukherjee. Baderoon is the author of the collections The Dream in the Next Body, The Museum of Ordinary Life and A hundred silences. For 2010/2011, she is a Research Fellow in the “Islam, African Publics and Religious Values” project at UCT.
