The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), in partnership with Pro Helvetia, will host a performance of Bleu Remix by award-winning Swiss choreographer and performance artist, Yann Marussich. The performance will be followed by a presentation and staged conversation with writer Alex Dodd.

Former director of the Theatre d l’Usane and founder of ADC studio in Geneva, Marussich’s more recent work has moved towards solo performance and body-art. In Bleu Remix, he returns to a theme explored in an earlier work, Bleu Provisoire: a mysterious blue liquid oozes, as blood would, through the layers of his skin – seemingly a by-product of his body’s inner processes. Marussich suggests the opening of pathways between the internal and external, the unconscious and conscious. In Bleu Remix, the artist once more allows audiences to experience this intimate journey, while also expanding on the original concept through a transformation of the senses.

With each performance of Bleu Remix, Marussich collaborates with a different local musician – a unique confrontation that establishes a new relationship between the sound and the created image. Acclaimed South African artist and experimental musician James Webb will be accompanying Marussich on his South African tour. Webb’s works have been presented around the world at leading institutions and major international exhibitions, most recently the 55th Venice Biennale.

Triggered by Marussich’s first-person bodily provocation, independent writer and editor Alex Dodd will respond with a staged reading of a series of dissociated text fragments and reflections on local instances of public embodiment practice. This will be followed by a conversation between Marussich, Webb, Dodd and the audience, exploring the motivations behind and responses to his static acts of visceral disturbance. Dodd is a PhD fellow with the Archive and Public Culture research group. Her research focuses on Afro-Victorian embodiment and the ways in which contemporary South African artists are conceptually recycling the 19th century.

This event will take place on Tuesday 9 July 2013 at 18:00, at Hiddingh Hall, University of Cape Town (UCT) Hiddingh Campus, Orange Street, Cape Town, and is free. No booking is necessary. For more information contact the GIPCA office 021 480 7156 or fin-gipca@uct.ac.za.
